Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is PTFE?

Polytetrafluoroethylene is widely used to impart non-stick properties to cookware coatings because of its low coefficient of friction. Its temperature stability is up to 260°C when used for food-contact applications.
Thermolon™ non-stick coating is PTFE-Free.

2. What is PFOA?

Perfluorooctanoic acid, sometimes referred to as "C8", is used as a processing aid in the manufacture of PTFE dispersions and other fluoropolymers. It is very persistent in the environment and is very slow to eliminate from the human body. Currently there is concern because PFOA can now be detected in the blood stream of most Americans, but the mechanism by which it enters the body is not understood.
There is growing evidence that PFOA should be considered as a likely carcinogen.
There is no PFOA in GreenPan™ cookware. There is no PFOA used to manufacture the Thermolon™ non-stick coatings.

3. What is Thermolon™?

Thermolon™ is the non-stick coating which is used on GreenPan™ cookware.
Thermolon™ is a hybrid polymer nano-composite non-stick technology.
It is a non-stick coating that is absolutely PTFE-free.

4. Up to how many degrees is Thermolon™ non-stick safe?

Thermolon™ non-stick is high-heat resistant - up to 850°F/ 450°C.
No more worries about overheating your pan.

5. Is it true that the best frying results are with a plain (without non-stick) fry pan?

Some dishes require a very hot fry pan to get a perfectly browned surface. With PTFE non-stick, you are not supposed to overheat your pan, so you can not allow your pan to become very hot.
With the Thermolon™ surface this is no longer a problem as you can allow your pan to become very hot - in fact you would find it very hard to overheat it.

6. Is it possible to store food in the refrigerator in GreenPan™ non-stick cookware?

Yes no problem at all. Especially with our Thermolon™ non-stick surface, it will give no reaction to any kind of food.

7. Is the GreenPan™ cookware dishwasher safe?

Your GreenPanTM product is very easy and convenient to clean. In the case of dishwasher use, the non-stick properties of all ceramic-type non-stick coatings may slowly start to fade after many cycles of washing. Hence, to preserve your pan at its optimum we recommend that you simply wash it in warm soapy water with a soft cloth.  Rinse and dry with a towel.

8. Can I use metal utensils for cooking or frying in my non-stick pan?

You can use metal utensils like spoons or whisks. The use of knives and forks is not recommended, because you can damage your surface when cutting the food.

9. Is it unhealthy to cook or fry in GreenPan™ non-stick cookware?

Thermolon™ is completely free of PTFE and PFOA. It is perfectly safe to cook on this surface.
The surface is extremely durable and cannot peel off by overheating.
Moreover it can not be overheated, and it does not release any kind of toxic fumes.

10. Do I need to use oil or butter for cooking or frying in my non-stick pan?

With non-stick cookware, you may want to use oil or fat for added crispness, colour or flavour.
It is not necessary to use cooking oil for easy food release.

11. What do you mean by seasoning the cookware?

Seasoning means to coat the cookware with a little bit of oil. Before the first use it's recommended to season your non-stick layer.
This process should be repeated if you use a dishwasher.

12. How can I recognize GreenPan™ cookware?

GreenPan™ cookware can always be recognized by the typical grey non-stick interior coating colour in combination with the GreenPan™ logo on the base of the cookware.

13. Why is GreenPan™ cookware friendly for the environment?

In comparison with Thermolon™ non-stick, PTFE coatings are double inefficient in their energy demand in the curing oven.
Halving the curing energy per pan by using Thermolon™ non-stick coatings reduces the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) that is generated.
