GreenPan™ cookware: When Green became the standard and not an option.

GreenPan™ and the environment

Traditional non-stick fry pans contain PTFE, are manufactured with PFOA and are limited in heat resistance - only up to 260°C / 500°F.

PTFE can’t be heated above 260°C / 500°F without damaging it.
When surpassing this limit, toxic fumes harmful for the human respiratory tract might be released. These fumes are even lethal to small pets like birds.

During the manufacturing of conventional PTFE based non-stick fry pans, PFOA is used and emitted into the environment. This is a persistent chemical that, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, can be considered as a “likely human carcinogen”.

PFOA can be found in numerous living organisms, even the human body.
Studies show that 95% of the population carry PFOA in their blood, recently scientists have found proof that this chemical is even passed to babies through their mothers’ milk.

Knowing that GreenPan™ with Thermolon™ does not use or contain these chemicals, it clearly offers the consumer a healthier, safer and more environmentally friendly cookware.

Compared with the production of PTFE based non-stick fry pans, our technology allows us to reduce the carbon emissions during the application of the coating by 60%!
Next to these benefits, GreenPan™ actively reduces packaging material, printing ink and printing colours.

Most raw materials used in production are recycled. Thanks to their ingenious design, the final products are easy to dissemble. This means that when no longer used the recycling of the product is easy.

Thanks to the excellent thermal conductivity of Thermolon™, less power is needed to reach high temperatures. Cooking with GreenPan™ requires less energy.

GreenPan™ and health

More attention for our health also means healthy food and healthy cooking.

Thanks to the unique properties of its Thermolon™ coating, GreenPan™ makes it possible to prepare meals with less oil.

This also contributes to a healthier life.

The most important accomplishment remains the PTFE and PFOA-free Thermolon™ technology. No risk of toxic fumes and no emission of PFOA.

GreenPan™ and convenience

A healthier or more environmentally friendly alternative doesn’t always lower the convenience.

Our fry pans allow you to prepare perfect dishes combined with easy maintenance.
No more rubbing or scrubbing, cleanup has become a breeze…

technology

Thermolon™ is a non-stick mineral* coating with superior release properties. Thermolon™ is based on Sol-Gel* technology.

*Mineral materials are derived from the earth. Such materials as used in Thermolon™ are completely food-safe and have been used to form ceramic items like pottery and glass.

* Sol-gel technology: technology in which materials formed from small particles suspended in Solution that Gel together to form a matrix. Thermolon™ is an example of a Sol-Gel technology.

Thermolon™ contains absolutely no PTFE* and no silicone oil.

It is manufactured PFOA*-free and applied in an environmentally friendly way, resulting in 60% less CO2 emissions.

Patented Thermolon™ non-stick technology offers a unique combination of properties:

High heat resistance up to 450°C (850°F): if you accidentally overheat your pan, no toxic fumes will be released and the coating itself will not be destroyed.

Superior release properties

Extreme hardness

Easy to clean surfaces

High heat function and faster more even heat distribution makes Thermolon™ ideal for short high heat searing, frying and even flambéing!

* Until today most of the non stick coatings comprise PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) or other fluoropolymers. Such polymers have many well-documented disadvantages in practical household use. For example, above 260°C fluoropolymers like PTFE are known to release a multitude of toxic chemicals. Thermolon does not contain any PTFE.

* To manufacture PTFE, generally, the synthetic chemical PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) is used. PFOA is classified as a persistent pollutant for the environment and consequently harmful to our health. Thermolon does not use any PFOA or other chemical to make it’s non stick coating.

ask
Harry

1. What is PTFE?

Polytetrafluoroethylene is widely used to impart non-stick properties to cookware coatings because of its low coefficient of friction. Its temperature stability is up to 260°C when used for food-contact applications.
Thermolon™ non-stick coating is PTFE-Free.

2. What is PFOA?

Perfluorooctanoic acid, sometimes referred to as "C8", is used as a processing aid in the manufacture of PTFE dispersions and other fluoropolymers. It is very persistent in the environment and is very slow to eliminate from the human body. Currently there is concern because PFOA can now be detected in the blood stream of most Americans, but the mechanism by which it enters the body is not understood.
There is growing evidence that PFOA should be considered as a likely carcinogen.
There is no PFOA in GreenPan™ cookware. There is no PFOA used to manufacture the Thermolon™ non-stick coatings.

3. What is Thermolon™?

Thermolon™ is the non-stick coating which is used on GreenPan™ cookware.
Thermolon™ is a non-stick mineral coating based on Sol-Gel technology with superior release properties but contains absolutely zero PTFE (and zero PFOA) and no silicone oil.

It is a non-stick coating that is absolutely PTFE-free.

4. Up to how many degrees is Thermolon™ non-stick safe?

Thermolon™ non-stick is high-heat resistant - up to 850°F/ 450°C.
No more worries about overheating your pan.

5. Is it true that the best frying results are with a plain (without non-stick) fry pan?

Some dishes require a very hot fry pan to get a perfectly browned surface. With PTFE non-stick, you are not supposed to overheat your pan, so you can not allow your pan to become very hot.
With the Thermolon™ surface this is no longer a problem as you can allow your pan to become very hot - in fact you would find it very hard to overheat it.

6. Is it possible to store food in the refrigerator in GreenPan™ non-stick cookware?

Yes no problem at all. Especially with our Thermolon™ non-stick surface, it will give no reaction to any kind of food.

7. Is the GreenPan™ cookware dishwasher safe?

Your GreenPan™ product is very easy and convenient to clean. In the case of dishwasher use, the non-stick properties of all ceramic-type non-stick coatings may slowly start to fade after many cycles of washing. Hence, to preserve your pan at its optimum we recommend that you simply wash it in warm soapy water with a soft cloth. Rinse and dry with a towel.

8. Can I use metal utensils for cooking or frying in my non-stick pan?

You can use metal utensils like spoons or whisks. The use of knives and forks is not recommended, because you can damage your surface when cutting the food.

9. Is it unhealthy to cook or fry in GreenPan™ non-stick cookware?

Thermolon™ is completely free of PTFE and PFOA. It is perfectly safe to cook on this surface.
The surface is extremely durable and cannot peel off by overheating.
Moreover it can not be overheated, and it does not release any kind of toxic fumes.

10. Do I need to use oil or butter for cooking or frying in my non-stick pan?

With non-stick cookware, you may want to use oil or fat for added crispness, colour or flavour.
It is not necessary to use cooking oil for easy food release.

11. What do you mean by seasoning the cookware?

Seasoning means to coat the cookware with a little bit of oil. Before the first use it's recommended to season your non-stick layer.
This process should be repeated if you use a dishwasher.

12. How can I recognize GreenPan™ cookware?

GreenPan™ cookware can always be recognized by the typical grey non-stick interior coating colour in combination with the GreenPan™ logo on the base of the cookware.

13. Why is GreenPan™ cookware friendly for the environment?

In comparison with Thermolon™ non-stick, PTFE coatings are double inefficient in their energy demand in the curing oven.
Halving the curing energy per pan by using Thermolon™ non-stick coatings reduces the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) that is generated.
